Maintaining Carpets
Fabric carpets and rugs require ongoing maintenance to keep them clean and in good condition longer. To maintain carpeting:
[1 ] Vacuum carpeting regularly to extend its life. Grit and debris com bined with foot traffic can wear down fabric, especially in high-traffic areas near doorways and in hallways.
[ 2 ] As needed, use carpet spot remover to ensure that stains do not deeply penetrate the carpet fabric. Pet urine stains, especially, can damage the fabric, backing, and padding below the carpet if not treated before they dry. Blot away excess liquid, then apply an oxygen cleaner following label directions.
& EXPERT TIP: The primary advantage to professional cleaning is the power of the chemicals used and of the equipment that removes the dirt and chemicals during cleaning. Small low-powered home carpet cleaning machines cannot do as good a job as professional truck-mounted machines and should be used for interim maintenance cleanings only Also, consider dry carpet cleaning machines and products, as they do not leave the carpet wet.
[ 3] Clean the carpet (or have it professionally cleaned) every six months or as needed. Low-traffic carpets and rooms can go a year or more without cleaning while high-traffic areas may need cleaning every three months. If possible, determine the carpet fabric type and cleaning requirements; some types require more or less cleaning than others. After five or more years, all
carpets require more cleaning than when new.
